Kenyan coffee is the stuff of legends, man—some of the most mind-blowing, sought-after beans on the planet. Wild to think that it’s only been growing here since 1893, especially with Ethiopia, the OG coffee motherland, right next door. But once it took root, it took off in a big way. About 70% of Kenya’s coffee comes from small-scale growers, most of them working the lush, high-plateau lands around Mount Kenya. This brew is something special—deep, complex, and packing a bright, electrifying acidity with a smooth, wine-like groove underneath.
Now, if you wanna talk about prime coffee-growing paradise, Nyeri County is where it’s at. Sitting pretty in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains, this place is pure magic—volcanic soil rich with nutrients, sunshine and rain in perfect harmony, and temperatures that stay between a mellow 12°C and a warm 25°C all year round. No wonder the coffee here is out of this world.
Kenya’s coffee industry is still powered by the small-scale growers, making up nearly 70% of production. One of the real standout crews is the Othaya Farmers Cooperative, made up of 1,126 family-run farms, each rocking about half an acre and around 250 coffee trees. These farmers bring their harvest to the Ichamama Factory, a wet mill where all that liquid gold gets processed to perfection. The coffee trees bloom twice a year, but the main harvest ripens from October to December, when the beans hit their peak and are ready to bring their rich, vibrant flavors to the world.
